vaxine

"vaxzine" is an art publication created by Aurora ArtBar and Art Alliance Illinois, aiming to disseminate COVID-19 vaccine information while showcasing the work of local artists in Aurora, Illinois. This project addresses the need for accessible information by combining engaging artwork with accurate vaccine details. It serves as a tangible resource for the community, especially those with limited internet access, fostering understanding and promoting vaccination. Through collaboration, community events, and distribution efforts, "Vaxzine" aims to bridge the digital divide and strengthen connections between the local art scene and public health initiatives.

With a curated selection of captivating artwork, "Vaxzine" celebrates the talent within Aurora while providing essential vaccine information. It serves as a platform for emerging and established artists, fostering community pride and supporting artistic diversity. By distributing physical copies in various locations and organizing engaging events, the project seeks to empower individuals, educate the community, and encourage informed decision-making regarding vaccination. Ultimately, "vaxzine" combines art, information, and community engagement to make a positive impact on public health and local culture.

ROLE/RESPONIBILITIES

My role was coordinating with artists and creating the zine, designing the cover, laying out the publication, managing the printing and distribution process, and speaking with local news radio about the zine on behalf of Artbar Aurora.

CHALLENGE/PROBLEM

During the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, people were confused about vaccine information and resources. As a community group in Aurora, IL, Artbar Aurora were made aware that misinformation was a barrier to vaccine adoption.

GOALS/OBJECTIVE

The goal was to create an art publication highlighting public health that could be distributed in local businesses. The zine contained art by local artists as well as vaccine information from the Illinois Department of Public Health in both English and Spanish about Covid-19 and the vaccines that were rolling out. This allowed people to consume the information in a less clinical way and a way for people who have limited internet access to get information about the pandemic.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Aurora residents and business, Spanish-speaking residents, and people averse to information on the internet (mainly senior residents).
